The geotechnical investigation project for the Southwest Mountainous Highway Reconstruction and Expansion Project undertook the tasks of subgrade exploration and rock sampling for highways in contiguous mountainous areas. The project area featured rugged terrain with significant elevation differences, loose surface soil, and dense deep granite strata. Traditional, outdated drilling rigs were cumbersome, had poor climbing ability, high failure rate when drilling hard rock, high fuel consumption, and substandard drilling accuracy, resulting in significant delays in the initial construction phase. There was an urgent need to replace them with specialized exploration drilling rigs adapted to the complex geological conditions of the mountainous terrain and with high mobility.

A large-scale open-pit sand and gravel mining company in northern China, with years of experience in ore mining and stone processing, had a batch of old down-the-hole drilling rigs that had been in service for over five years. These rigs were experiencing issues such as power attenuation, large drilling deviations, high maintenance frequency, and excessive energy consumption. Coupled with the current upgrades to green mining construction standards and plans to expand mining capacity, the existing equipment's capacity could not match monthly mining targets. Equipment repairs, downtime, and high maintenance costs continued to drive up operating costs. Therefore, they planned to replace their existing rigs with high-efficiency, energy-saving open-pit drilling rigs.
